A Pracademic with Purpose

Cynthia Chigwenya is not merely a scholar or practitioner — she is a pracademic, one of a rare breed blending rigorous academic research with real-world impact. Her journey includes experience at South Africa’s Parliament, Rwanda’s National Genocide Commission, and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, where she coordinated political dialogue across Sub-Saharan Africa. Through these roles, she has consistently advanced evidence-based policymaking, with special attention to peacebuilding, governance, and youth inclusion.

She holds a Bachelor of Social Science in Criminology and International Studies, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) summa cum laude, and a Master’s in Development Studies from Wits University, with focused research on transitional justice in Rwanda, Zimbabwe’s peace architecture, and mediation efforts in South Sudan. These studies are not abstract to her — they reflect the hard realities of post-conflict societies and the urgent need for constitutionalism and human dignity to take root.

A Voice for Peace, Youth, and Climate Justice

Chigwenya’s global footprint is as impressive as her academic rigour. In 2023, she briefed the United Nations Security Council, urging global leaders to future-proof trust for sustainable peace — a pivotal call in a world increasingly fractured by conflict and disinformation. A certified election observer and celebrated TEDx speaker, she has addressed high-level symposia including the EU-AU Summit, where she advocated for youth-led solutions to Africa’s development challenges.

Her current leadership roles include serving as a Partner at Fundraising for Impact, Council Member of the Rihla Initiative for Green Economic Growth, and as a Youth Advisory Council member for the Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace and Security. From championing climate finance in emerging markets to rethinking security sector governance, Cynthia is shaping policy with both insight and foresight.

Honoured by the Continent She Serves

In recognition of her transformative work, Cynthia was named one of the Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) under 40 in Politics, a distinction that affirms her rising status as a continental thought leader. Most notably, she served as the African Union Youth Ambassador for Southern Africa (2022–2024), becoming a powerful advocate for youth participation in democratic processes and institutional reform.
