Addressing a gathering that included high-ranking government officials, police officers, and the families of the fallen, Acting President Mashatile emphasized the courage and dedication of the men and women in blue who selflessly protected the nation. “These police officers who died while protecting South Africa and her people are not just a statistic; they were husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters,” Mashatile remarked, expressing deep condolences to the bereaved families.

The Acting President also highlighted the alarming increase in violence against law enforcement officers, describing it as an attack on the state itself. He called for decisive action against those who target police officers, stating, “Killing a police officer is tantamount to treason.”

Mashatile acknowledged the significant role of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks) in bringing perpetrators to justice, noting that 18 suspected police killers had been arrested between April and June this year, with 12 of them receiving sentences totaling 139 years of imprisonment.

The Acting President urged the police to remain steadfast in their duties, despite the challenges they face. He also called for better resources and support for the SAPS, including addressing issues such as low morale, ageing infrastructure, and the need for more recruits to meet the United Nations’ recommended police-to-population ratio.

Highlighting the importance of community collaboration, Mashatile encouraged South Africans to work with the police in combating crime and protecting their neighborhoods. He also commended the SAPS Education Trust (SAPSET) for its ongoing support of the children of deceased police officers, ensuring they continue their education.

In his closing remarks, Acting President Mashatile honored the 39 fallen officers, expressing gratitude for their bravery and service. “May the souls of the gallant 39-crime fighters rest in eternal peace,” he concluded.

The event served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve to protect South Africa, as well as the collective responsibility of the nation to support and safeguard its law enforcement officers.
