The Deputy President’s visit underscores the strong and friendly relations between South Africa and Vietnam, rooted in a shared history of anti-colonial struggle and a commitment to multilateral cooperation and global governance reform.

Honoring Vietnam’s Legacy and Celebrating 30 Years of Diplomatic Relations

Mashatile’s first stop was the iconic Mausoleum and home of Vietnam’s revered leader, Ho Chi Minh. Laying a wreath at the Mausoleum, he conveyed a message of support and solidarity from the people and government of South Africa. This symbolic gesture underlines the deep respect and admiration South Africa holds for Vietnam’s history and its unwavering pursuit of freedom and independence.

This year marks a significant milestone in bilateral relations – the 30th anniversary of the establishment of formal diplomatic ties between South Africa and Vietnam. Over the past three decades, the two countries have established a robust framework for cooperation, encompassing various areas like trade, science, technology, and culture. The functioning of the Inter-Governmental Partnership Forum serves as a testament to the commitment of both nations to fostering mutually beneficial collaboration.

Building Bridges and Strengthening Partnerships

Mashatile’s visit builds upon the momentum generated by the September visit of Vietnamese Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan to South Africa. During her visit, she extended an invitation for a reciprocal visit, which Mashatile has gladly accepted. This exchange of high-level visits demonstrates the shared desire to further strengthen the existing bonds of friendship and cooperation.

A Packed Agenda for Deepening Ties

During his stay in Vietnam, Deputy President Mashatile will hold official talks with key Vietnamese officials, including Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and President Vo Van Th ong. These meetings will provide a platform for discussing bilateral priorities, exploring new avenues for collaboration, and solidifying the strategic partnership between the two nations.

Mashatile’s schedule also includes engaging with business leaders from Vietnam’s top companies exploring investment opportunities in South Africa and sourcing goods and services. He will also interact with African ambassadors to Vietnam, fostering broader regional cooperation and understanding.

A Delegation Representing South Africa’s Diverse Expertise

Deputy President Mashatile is accompanied by a delegation of high-ranking South African officials representing various sectors, including international relations, trade, education, science, and the environment. This diverse representation underscores the comprehensive nature of the visit and the commitment of both countries to exploring a wide range of potential partnerships.
