Africa Heritage Society (AHS) in collaboration with the C2C Initiative, 1873 Network’s Banking on Africa’s Future (BOAF) and Salute the Champions (STC) Initiative is pleased to proclaim and announce 4 April as JJ Singh Appreciation Day

This is with effect from Monday, the 4th of April 2021

The appreciation is in recognition of Mr. Jagjit Singh, aka the “Punjab Boy’s role in helping to define and shape the personality and character of the kind of contribution that business actors should make in addressing the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality.

In a joint statement, AHS, C2C and STC, said that the JJ Singh Appreciation Day is meant for members of the above-mentioned communities and citizens in general to pause and reflect on the idea of corporate citizenship and on the role played by corporate actors in delivering the promise of prosperous, dynamic, inclusive, and cohesive communities.

They further added that the business fraternity is a critical component in the advancement of personal and community interests through the provision of products, services and solutions that promote human growth and development, and as such, its players must be recognized and be celebrated.

According to historical evidence, people of African descent have faced significant challenges in building a business legacy, not only because of racial, class and institutionalized constraints, but more significantly because of poor financial and commercial literacy.

On that note, Mr Singh has severally demonstrated that business is all about problem solving and it is not about the place of birth since solutions to human problems are not tribal-centric.

The journey as well as the inspiring endeavours and accomplishments by the Punjab Boy from India to South Africa has opened several doors for many and delivered quality means to a diverse clientele.

His contribution in the community makes Africa to be well positioned at this historic and defining moment where the developed world is even adjusting to a new economic reality which seeks to deliver on the promise of a better life for most of its people through leveraging on the rich resource endowment of the African continent.

In recognising JJ’s effect and impact in the business sector and across the social sphere, President of the Africa Heritage Society, Mr. Mutumwa Mawere said “To many people, diversity is a threat, but to the literate, it allows untapped opportunities to be efficiently and effectively unlocked.

Africa’s markets are generating a new sense of optimism about the future of the continent, and as such, a well and forthcoming Africa stands to benefit from the knowledge, experiences, and insights of others like JJ.

In this regard, the strengthening of Africa’s business leadership is as important as building a new generation of political leaders that can inspire hope”.

While accepting his grand recognition and celebrating his C2C membership, Mr. Singh said: “I am humbled for receiving this recognition. I was born in India, but Africa is my home of choice, and South Africa is where I chose to be based. I have made friends and have expanded my horizon and impact.

Being a member of the C2C initiative has enabled me to leverage on my circles and connections to the benefit of others. My life journey is a living testament of what is possible and why diversity must be celebrated rather than to be condemned.

When your peers recognize your value addition towards making Africa what it was always meant to be, one is inspired to do more.”

According to the Africa Heritage Society, the greatest significance of the JJ Singh Appreciation Day is that it benefits business leaders, state and non-state actors inclusive of African captains of industry, the media and the government to reflect on what kind of Africa they want to see as a location for building and driving the transformation agenda.

“We encourage citizens to use this day to celebrate the role of business through the facilitation of business exchanges” said Mr. Mawere.

On the same side-lines, iniAfrica News Editor and fellow member of the C2C Initiative, Mr Brian Kazungu said: “I believe that it is initiatives like these that help raise awareness of the role of business actors in provoking, inspiring and igniting positive change.

I personally look at this as part of reimagining the role of the media in informing, educating and inspiring active citizenship.

This is because of the fact that when knowledge is openly shared and positivity is showcased and celebrated, it can help change paradigms on what is yet to be done when we choose to work together.”
