President Ramaphosa acknowledged the challenges these men and women faced during their rigorous training, emphasizing the demanding nature of their chosen profession. He commended them for choosing the path of service and dedication, acknowledging the sacrifices they made away from friends and family.

Expressing concern about the prevailing crime rates in the country, the President highlighted the urgent need for a robust response. He emphasized that the new recruits are a crucial part of the government’s strategy to address crime, with 10,000 new recruits trained in 2023 alone.

President Ramaphosa outlined the significant progress made by the SAPS, citing Operation Shanela, which resulted in over 250,000 arrests and the recovery of numerous firearms and stolen vehicles. He applauded the collaborative efforts with the National Prosecuting Authority in securing life sentences for perpetrators of gender-based violence.

Addressing the new constables directly, President Ramaphosa stressed their responsibility as first responders, urging them to serve with courtesy, dignity, and respect. He emphasized the importance of restoring public faith in the SAPS, urging the recruits to earn the trust of the community through their actions.

As the new constables prepare to be deployed to various units, including Public Order Policing and units addressing family violence and sexual offenses, President Ramaphosa expressed confidence in their ability to uphold the laws and constitution of South Africa.

In closing, the President expressed gratitude to the leaders of the SANDF 3 Infantry Battalion Academy for their unwavering support and acknowledged the sacrifices of the families and friends of the trainees.

The passing out parade is part of a broader initiative to strengthen the capacity of the SAPS and enhance visible policing efforts across the nation. The new recruits are poised to contribute significantly to the fight against crime and ensuring the safety and security of all South Africans.

I explore the role of these institutions in fulfilling the promise of a better Africa, and, most importantly, the causal link between the rule of law and economic development. As a fellow believer in Africa’s potential, can I count on you to be a point of light in securing our continent’s future?
