Mbabane, December 31, 2024 – The much-anticipated Mbabane Crossover Show, organized by the Philani Maswati Charity Organization, in collaboration with Mbabane East and West Tinkhundla and Mbabane City Council was unfortunately cancelled today due to heavy rains that disrupted event preparations and posed safety concerns.

The event, which aimed to raise funds for elderly residents in Mbabane, began on an exciting note with a lively session of Shukuma exercises led by renowned South African fitness enthusiast Nkululeko “King of Squats” Dlamini. The fitness activity attracted a large crowd, including ministers, Members of Parliament and business leaders, setting a vibrant tone for the day.

However, just as the main program was set to begin, the unexpected heavy rains caused significant damage to the stage and sound system, rendering the venue unsafe for the continuation of the event. Popular performers such as Mduduzi Ncube and Sipho Makhabane had already arrived and were prepared to take the stage. Despite efforts to salvage the situation, the sound engineer advised against proceeding with the event due to the risks posed by wet cables and waterlogged equipment.

Philani Maswati Charity Organization Chairperson Lutfo Dlamini expressed deep regret over the cancellation, offering sincere apologies to all stakeholders, sponsors and ticket holders for the unfortunate turn of events. He acknowledged the disappointment of attendees and emphasized the organization’s ongoing commitment to supporting the elderly.

“We suffered yet another climate change consequence. When we planned this event about 3 months ago, the weather forecast indicated a very rain-free 31st. As of last week, it only showed drizzle at midnight and then today, boom, a countrywide heavy storm.

Our sincere apologies to all for this unfortunate act of nature,” Dlamini stated. “While this setback has affected our fundraising efforts, we remain steadfast in our mission and will explore alternative avenues to support those in need. We are already planning future events that will ensure our charitable objectives are met and the funds continue to flow for the betterment of our elderly community.”

The sound system for the event was generously sponsored by Taste of Africa, who also supported the decision to cancel after consultations with the sound engineers. Dlamini further noted, “As this is an unforeseen act of nature, the losses incurred are regrettable. Nonetheless, our commitment to assisting the elderly and vulnerable members of our community remains unwavering.”

The Philani Maswati Charity Organization extends its gratitude to all supporters and partners and looks forward to future events that will advance its charitable goals.
