Today marks a remarkable milestone in global automotive history as Volvo celebrates 97 years since the production of its very first car, the Volvo ÖV 4, which rolled off the assembly line on April 14, 1927. The iconic vehicle, affectionately known as the “Öppen Vagn 4 cylindrar” (Open Carriage 4 cylinders), was a symbol of Swedish ingenuity and resilience, designed to endure the harsh Nordic climate and rugged terrain.

The name Volvo, Latin for “I roll”, was originally registered in May 1911 by the Swedish bearing manufacturer SKF, reflecting the company’s original focus on ball bearings. But it wasn’t until 1924 that the dream of a distinctly Swedish car brand took form. Assar Gabrielsson, then a sales manager at SKF, and Gustav Larson, an engineer educated at the prestigious KTH Royal Institute of Technology, came together with a shared vision: to build cars that prioritized safety, durability, and design excellence.
Nearly a century later, Volvo has not only revolutionized automotive safety and innovation on the global stage but has also carved out a strong presence in Africa, where its corporate social investment (CSI) initiatives continue to uplift communities and transform lives.
Driving Change in South Africa and Beyond
In South Africa, Volvo’s commitment to social development is embodied in a number of impactful CSI programs. The Volvo Group Southern Africa’s Driver Learnership Programme, for example, empowers young South Africans—especially women—by providing them with professional truck driving skills, helping address both youth unemployment and gender inequality in the logistics industry.

Through its partnership with local technical and vocational education training (TVET) colleges, Volvo also supports mechanical and engineering skills development, equipping the next generation with the tools to participate meaningfully in the automotive and transport sectors.
On a continental scale, Volvo Group’s “Star for Life” program—active in several African countries—promotes youth empowerment through education, addressing social challenges such as HIV/AIDS awareness, mental health, and personal development. This initiative has reached thousands of learners, inspiring a future generation that is healthier, more informed, and more hopeful.
A Legacy Still Rolling
From its humble beginnings with the ÖV 4 to becoming a global leader in automotive safety, sustainability, and innovation, Volvo’s journey reflects a powerful blend of heritage and forward-thinking vision. As the brand looks to the future with its focus on electrification, carbon neutrality, and inclusive mobility, it remains rooted in its founding values of quality, safety, and care for people.
This April 14th, we celebrate more than a car—we celebrate a movement that began with two visionaries and continues to roll forward across continents, building a better world with every mile.
Over the years, I have found it challenging to define myself solely by an academic qualification, trade, or occupation. My eagerness to learn, especially about how to build and deploy capital, has allowed me to accumulate diverse experiences in a short span of time. Through this journey, I have discovered that at my core, I am a storyteller. I tell the stories of corporations, their heritage, and the individuals who act in their name. I explore the role of these institutions in fulfilling the promise of a better Africa, and, most importantly, the causal link between the rule of law and economic development. As a fellow believer in Africa’s potential, can I count on you to be a point of light in securing our continent’s future?
