Pretoria, South Africa — President Cyril Ramaphosa held a telephone conversation on the morning of Wednesday, 6 August 2025, with United States President Donald Trump, focusing on strengthening bilateral trade relations between South Africa and the United States.

The high-level discussion touched on current trade dynamics and future collaboration opportunities. Both leaders reaffirmed the importance of ongoing cooperation between the two nations, particularly in light of evolving global trade frameworks and negotiations in which the United States is actively engaged.
In a statement from the Presidency, it was confirmed that President Ramaphosa and President Trump expressed a mutual commitment to continued dialogue and engagement on trade matters. They agreed that respective trade negotiating teams from both governments would advance more detailed and technical discussions in the coming weeks.
This development comes as South Africa seeks to deepen its trade ties with major global partners, while also positioning itself as a strategic gateway to the African continent.
Further updates are expected following the initial round of negotiations led by both countries’ trade officials.
Over the years, I have found it challenging to define myself solely by an academic qualification, trade, or occupation. My eagerness to learn, especially about how to build and deploy capital, has allowed me to accumulate diverse experiences in a short span of time. Through this journey, I have discovered that at my core, I am a storyteller. I tell the stories of corporations, their heritage, and the individuals who act in their name. I explore the role of these institutions in fulfilling the promise of a better Africa, and, most importantly, the causal link between the rule of law and economic development. As a fellow believer in Africa’s potential, can I count on you to be a point of light in securing our continent’s future?
