In a strategic move to bolster South Africa’s investment climate and accelerate inclusive economic growth, President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Dr Alistair Ruiters as Special Advisor: Investment Promotion.

Dr Ruiters, a seasoned public servant and accomplished entrepreneur, brings to the Presidency a wealth of experience from both the public and private sectors. His appointment comes as part of the 7th Administration’s renewed emphasis on economic reform, job creation, and greater integration into global and continental markets.
The Presidency stated that Dr Ruiters will play a critical advisory role in driving South Africa’s investment agenda, ensuring the country remains an attractive destination for both domestic and international investors. His guidance will support ongoing efforts to diversify the economy and strengthen its participation in global supply chains.
Dr Ruiters previously served as Director-General of the Department of Trade and Industry for five years until 2005, capping 11 years of service in the department. He is also a former Commissioner of the Competition Commission and has held senior leadership roles in various institutions, including the National Empowerment Fund and the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor project. He has also served as Chairperson of the Afarak Group.
In addition to his extensive professional track record, Dr Ruiters holds a DPhil from Oxford University and a BA Honours from the University of Cape Town, among other qualifications.
The appointment underscores President Ramaphosa’s commitment to securing sustainable investments that can transform the South African economy and deliver tangible benefits to its citizens.
Over the years, I have found it challenging to define myself solely by an academic qualification, trade, or occupation. My eagerness to learn, especially about how to build and deploy capital, has allowed me to accumulate diverse experiences in a short span of time. Through this journey, I have discovered that at my core, I am a storyteller. I tell the stories of corporations, their heritage, and the individuals who act in their name. I explore the role of these institutions in fulfilling the promise of a better Africa, and, most importantly, the causal link between the rule of law and economic development. As a fellow believer in Africa’s potential, can I count on you to be a point of light in securing our continent’s future?
