On May 21, 2025, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa met U.S. President Donald Trump with the aim of resetting strained U.S.-South Africa relations.
President Ramaphosa displayed a calm demeanour which has earned him widespread admiration, embodying the biblical call to “be still” from Psalm 46:10.
His composed leadership contrasted sharply with Trump’s provocative style, offering a masterclass in diplomacy under pressure.

The relations between South Africa and the United States had hit a low point because of a contentious “white genocide” narrative related to farm murders.
President Trump persisted with the claims of farm murders targeted at white farmers despite South African police data showing only 44 of 26,232 murders in 2024 involved farming communities, with just eight farmers killed.
Ramaphosa strategically set a positive tone, bringing South African golfers Ernie Els and Retief Goosen and a book on South Africa’s golf courses to appeal to Trump’s interests.
As President Trump pushed his narrative backed by a video of Julius Malema chanting the “Kill the Boer” song, President Ramaphosa remained unruffled.
He calmly clarified, “What you saw… is not government policy. We have a multiparty democracy that allows free expression.” Pointing to white South Africans in his delegation, including business tycoon Johann Rupert, he added, “If there was a genocide, these gentlemen would not be here.”
This response, which was delivered with poise, redirected the conversation and highlighted President Ramaphosa’s ability to stay focused under pressure.
His composure reflected the Biblical principle of “being still,” allowing clarity in chaos, much like Jesus’ public presence amid criticism.

By embodying composure, President Ramaphosa defended South Africa’s sovereignty and modeled leadership that prioritizes clarity and respect, winning hearts in a polarized world.
His performance underscored the power of steady leadership, proving that a calm demeanor can indeed knock sense into even the most unpredictable settings.
