In a landmark address today at the Microsoft Investment and AI Skilling Initiative Announcement, President Cyril Ramaphosa underscored the transformative role of artificial intelligence in shaping South Africa’s economic and social future. Speaking before a distinguished audience that included government leaders, top business figures, and representatives from Microsoft and the G20 Engagement Groups, the President heralded the event as a pivotal moment in the nation’s digital transformation journey.

A Legacy of Partnership and Innovation
President Ramaphosa opened his remarks by lauding Microsoft’s enduring commitment to South Africa, noting that the tech giant has maintained a presence in the country since its first office opened in 1992. “Microsoft is an American company with an African heart,” he said, emphasizing that the company’s expansion—through thousands of local partners, significant investments in data centres, and its push to empower young South Africans—demonstrates a strong vote of confidence in the country’s potential.
Building Digital Skills for the Future
Central to the announcement was the launch of the National AI Skilling Initiative, designed to equip public servants with cutting-edge AI training. The initiative is set to play a crucial role in addressing skills shortages and preparing the nation for a high-tech future. In addition, the upcoming signing of a memorandum of understanding between Microsoft, the National School of Government, and the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa signals a deepened commitment to building digital capacity at all levels of government.
Strengthening Digital Infrastructure and Regulation
Highlighting the importance of secure and efficient digital services, the President pointed to the government’s recent publication of the National Data and Cloud Policy. Alongside Microsoft’s ongoing investments in cloud technology, South Africa is finalising a Cybersecurity Bill aimed at securing online government services and safeguarding citizens’ digital transactions. Ramaphosa emphasized that these measures, including the rollout of a transformative digital identity system, will ensure that government services are accessible anytime, anywhere.
Championing Economic Empowerment and Inclusive Growth
President Ramaphosa commended Microsoft’s achievement of Level 1 Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment status as a testament to its commitment to redressing historical inequalities. “Microsoft has integrated the objectives of ownership, management control, and skills development into its business operations, reflecting its deep commitment to our empowerment goals,” he stated. This milestone, he noted, not only underlines the company’s inclusive ethos but also sets a benchmark for private sector participation in South Africa’s transformation.
Paving the Way for a High-Tech Economy
The President’s address also touched on the wider economic implications of the AI revolution. With plans to train one million South Africans in AI skills, machine learning, and cybersecurity by 2026, the initiative aims to tackle high youth unemployment and foster a new generation of tech and software entrepreneurs. “The AI revolution is a catalyst for job creation,” Ramaphosa said, linking the initiative to broader efforts to reform education and prepare Generation Beta—a generation born into a digital era—for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow’s workforce.
A Vision for Africa in the G20 Era
As South Africa hosts the G20 Summit later this year, the event and its announcements take on added significance. Ramaphosa stressed that leveraging AI for sustainable development is a key priority of the country’s G20 Presidency. He called for robust partnerships between government, academia, and industry to ensure that AI and related technologies narrow the digital divide rather than widen it, paving the way for inclusive growth across the continent.
In closing, President Ramaphosa expressed his optimism about the future. “Our country and our continent have huge potential, driven by the talents and energies of our people. It is up to all of us, working in partnership, to ensure that AI catalyses Africa’s growth and progress,” he concluded, setting a hopeful tone for the transformative journey ahead.
Over the years, I have found it challenging to define myself solely by an academic qualification, trade, or occupation. My eagerness to learn, especially about how to build and deploy capital, has allowed me to accumulate diverse experiences in a short span of time. Through this journey, I have discovered that at my core, I am a storyteller. I tell the stories of corporations, their heritage, and the individuals who act in their name. I explore the role of these institutions in fulfilling the promise of a better Africa, and, most importantly, the causal link between the rule of law and economic development. As a fellow believer in Africa’s potential, can I count on you to be a point of light in securing our continent’s future?
