Maimane asserts that Zimbabwe is SA’s Albatross

Maimane asserts that Zimbabwe’s alleged self-created economic quagmire is South Africa’s (SA) albatross.

What is the link between xenophobia in SA and the Zimbabwean crisis?

Although no empirical evidence exists that can provide for any objective test on the causal link between migration of Zimbabwean to SA, there can be no doubt that if Zimbabwe got its act together, the cross border traffic could be reversed.

Some may say who is the Maimane of Zimbabwe who can eloquently speak truth to power on the urgency and importance of fixing the Zimbabwe problem but the reality is that elections may not be sufficient to tame the imperial Presidency that has crowded out the space for an open, accountable and transparent democratic system in Zimbabwe.

Mr. Frank Williams said: “As a Zimbabwe who is living and working in the diaspora, I concur with Maimane that what Russia under Putin has done to Ukraine pales in comparison to what Zimbabwe has been subjected to over the last 42 years.

Before independence, I used to invite my college mates in SA to visit Rhodesia to see the Zimbabwe Ruins and had no idea that after 42 years, the visit will deliver the reality of a Ukraine ruins that was avoidable.

The role of SA in undermining the democratic space in Zimbabwe is unmistakable as is the role of many countries in acquiescing to the Putin strong arm tactics that the human spirit and its creative genius based on liberty can be tamed and manipulated by bombs.

The rule of law speaks to the human spirit and it is the case that even Russians who live in Ukraine are not prepared to voluntarily choose to live in Russia.

It would not take a rocket scientist to know that no rational person would not be tempted to surrender a future to a country where the rule of law is crippled by the very people who are in government to secure it.”
