Minister of Energy and Electricity Welcomes Decision to Extend Koeberg Nuclear Power Station Unit 1 Operating Life

Cape Town, July 15, 2024 – Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Minister of Energy and Electricity, has welcomed the National Nuclear Regulator’s announcement to extend the operating life of Koeberg Nuclear Power Station Unit 1. The decision, made in alignment with the regulator’s nuclear safety imperative, marks a significant milestone for South Africa’s energy sector.

Dr. Ramokgopa hailed the decision as a testament to Koeberg’s exemplary safety record and a reaffirmation of the critical role of nuclear energy in ensuring the country’s energy security. “The extension of the operating life of Koeberg Nuclear Power Station Unit 1 will not only ensure the continued supply of electricity to meet the growing demand but also contribute to our efforts in transitioning towards a cleaner, more affordable, and sustainable energy future,” he stated.
