Mbabane, Eswatini – Saturday, February 22, 2025

Old age can be a lonely time for many, but at the Mbabane Alliance Church, that is about to change. The church under the leadership of créative Bishop JV Mazibuko took a historic step today with the launch of the Mbabane Alliance Church Elderly Fellowship, an initiative dedicated to creating a supportive, spiritually enriching and socially engaging space for elderly members of the congregation. While this initiative began within the church, its vision extends to all churches across the nation under the pioneering leadership of Bishop JV Mazibuko.
The inaugural Elderly Fellowship Luncheon was a day of warmth, faith and celebration. Attendees, many of whom had longed for such a community, gathered in anticipation of what promises to be a transformative movement for the elderly in churches nationwide. The event was meticulously planned, ensuring that each segment contributed to the overarching theme of love, care and honor for senior members.
A Day of Enlightenment and Encouragement
The program commenced with an opening prayer by Pastor K. Magagula, setting a reverent and expectant tone. Mr. Jerome Shiba followed with heartfelt welcome remarks, emphasizing the significance of the momentous occasion.
One of the key discussions of the day, “Why Elderly Fellowship?”, was led by Mr. Sithembiso Matsebula, who articulated the need for community, companionship and spiritual nourishment in the later years of life. His words resonated deeply with attendees, many of whom nodded in agreement, affirming the necessity of the initiative.
Health and Wellness at the Forefront
Understanding that aging brings unique health concerns, the event featured two insightful health talks. Mrs. Thandi Mazibuko and Ms. Sindiso Bhembe shared invaluable knowledge on maintaining physical and mental well-being in old age. From nutrition and exercise to emotional and mental health, their presentations empowered attendees with practical strategies to enhance their quality of life.
After a refreshing tea break, Reverend A. Kunene delivered a powerful sermon, reminding everyone that God’s love and purpose remain steadfast throughout all seasons of life. His message, infused with scripture and wisdom, left many uplifted and reassured.
A National Call to Action
The highlight of the day was the official launch of the Mbabane Alliance Church Elderly Fellowship by TACE President, Brother P. Mkhaliphi. In his speech, he acknowledged Bishop Mazibuko’s vision, emphasizing that this was not just a church program but a national movement to ensure that elderly congregants across Eswatini find solace, purpose and community in the fellowship of the church.
Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Lutfo Dlamini, Chairperson of Philani Maswati Charity commended the church for spearheading this initiative, noting that it aligns with broader national efforts to care for the elderly. He pledged support and encouraged other churches to adopt similar programs. He on behalf of Philani Charity appreciated the move by both Bishop Mazibuko and Alliance Church for emulating Her Majesty’s vision of caring for the elderly in the country. Lutfo promised to invite the church to pay Her Majesty a visit to explain in detail this faith based support for the elderly.
Philani Maswati Charity presented special blankets gifts to the longest married couples.
Mr and Mrs Manyatsi (43 years married)
Mr and Mrs Sibandze (38 years)
He emphasised that these blankets are blessings from
Her Majesty Indlovukazi’s heart.
Words from the Heart
As the program drew to a close, emotions ran high. Mr. J.C. Magagula expressed gratitude in the vote of thanks, reflecting on the hard work and dedication that made the event possible. The final prayer, led by Pastor Comrade Magagula, sealed the event with a spirit of unity and divine blessing.
The event concluded with a hearty luncheon, where attendees engaged in meaningful conversations, reminiscing about the past and looking forward to a future filled with fellowship and love.
A Lasting Impact
Speaking on the significance of the event, Bishop Mazibuko stated, “This is more than just a gathering; it is a movement. We want to see every church in Eswatini creating a space for their elderly members, ensuring that no one spends their later years in isolation.”
One elderly attendee, Gogo Thoko Dlamini, shared, “For the first time in a long time, I feel seen, valued and cherished. This initiative is truly a blessing.”
Thokozile Jele, one of the program directors, remarked, “The response today has been overwhelming. We have sown a seed and with God’s grace, this fellowship will grow into something life-changing for our elderly members.”
The Mbabane Alliance Church Elderly Fellowship has indeed set a new precedent. What started as an idea is now a reality, promising a future where the elderly are not just remembered but celebrated, supported and embraced. Today was not just an event; it was the beginning of a revolution of love and care.
