President Cyril Ramaphosa Calls for Unity and Solidarity at Non-Aligned Movement Summit

KAMPALA, Republic of Uganda – January 19, 2024 – President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Kampala, Uganda, expressing gratitude for the warm reception and commending the outgoing Chair, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan. President Ramaphosa conveyed full support to the new Chair, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, as the country takes over the leadership of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Group of 77 plus China.

Against the backdrop of global challenges, President Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of the Non-Aligned Movement asserting its independence based on common values. He highlighted the crises in Ukraine and Palestine, stressing the need for international stability through multilateralism.

South Africa, maintaining its non-aligned approach, advocates for inclusive dialogue and peaceful political settlements to disputes. President Ramaphosa urged collective determination in addressing common challenges such as climate change, pandemics, terrorism, and illicit financial flows, emphasizing the need for globally agreed rules.

The President called for attention to the reform of global governance institutions, including the United Nations, to ensure the strengthening of the voice of the African Continent and the Global South. He outlined key areas of support for the Non-Aligned Movement, including self-determination for Palestine and Western Sahara, lifting economic blockades, reaffirming the right of access to nuclear materials, upholding the UN Charter, and defeating terrorism.

President Ramaphosa specifically addressed the conflict in Gaza, calling for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the resumption of talks for a just solution. South Africa has approached the International Court of Justice, seeking provisional measures against Israel’s military campaign to protect the rights of the Palestinian people.

Highlighting the inadequacy of the UN Security Council, President Ramaphosa emphasized the need for a fair and equitable global governance system. He stressed the importance of equality among nations and individuals, calling for a commitment to women’s rights, disarmament, and non-proliferation.

In conclusion, President Ramaphosa urged the Non-Aligned Movement to strengthen cooperation, drawing on the founding principle of solidarity. He emphasized that unity and purpose will lead to emerging stronger from the global difficulties faced by all.

The summit concluded with a renewed commitment to the principles of the Non-Aligned Movement, paving the way for enhanced cooperation in development, peace, security, and human rights.
