President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa held a productive meeting yesterday with Mr. Malik Agar Eyre Nganyoufa, the Deputy President of the Transitional Sovereign Council of Sudan. The discussions centered on recent events in Sudan and international efforts aimed at bringing an end to the ongoing conflict and violence.

The meeting between President Ramaphosa and Mr. Nganyoufa was a follow-up to their telephone conversation on July 2, 2023. During the discussion, Mr. Nganyoufa provided a comprehensive briefing on the current conflict in the Republic of Sudan.

President Ramaphosa expressed South Africa’s deep concern about the prolonged nature of the conflict between the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. He urged the Transitional Sovereign Council, along with the Sudan Armed Forces, to urgently work towards a peaceful resolution in Sudan.

South Africa firmly believes that lasting peace for Sudan and its people can be achieved through an inclusive dialogue process. President Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of respecting the commitments made by all parties to the Juba Peace Agreement (JPA), which was signed on October 3, 2020.

President Ramaphosa also conveyed South Africa’s willingness to contribute to efforts aimed at ending the conflict and violence if requested by the East African Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the African Union, or any other relevant stakeholders.

Both leaders agreed to maintain regular communication regarding the situation in Sudan, demonstrating their commitment to facilitating a peaceful resolution and creating conditions for lasting peace.

Commentary:

The resolution of the ongoing conflict in Sudan holds great promise for the people of Sudan and the wider region. The absence of conflict not only brings immediate relief to those affected but also paves the way for a better livelihood for the Sudanese population. Peace enables the establishment of stable institutions, the provision of essential services such as healthcare and education, and the promotion of economic development.

By advocating for an inclusive dialogue process, President Ramaphosa emphasizes the importance of involving all stakeholders in the peacebuilding efforts. Inclusive dialogue ensures that the diverse voices and perspectives of the Sudanese people are heard, fostering a sense of ownership and collective responsibility for the peace process.

Furthermore, achieving sustainable peace in Sudan provides a conducive environment for the economy to thrive. Without the disruption caused by conflict, investment can flow into the country, leading to job creation, economic growth, and improved living standards for the population. A stable Sudan can attract foreign investors, promote trade partnerships, and foster regional stability.

However, it is essential to recognize that peace is not the sole responsibility of leaders or governments. It is a collective effort that requires participation from all segments of society. Each individual, community, and organization must contribute to building inclusive, progressive, and prosperous communities that work for the betterment of all Sudanese citizens.

As President Ramaphosa and Mr. Nganyoufa continue to engage on the situation in Sudan, their commitment and diplomatic efforts serve as a beacon of hope for the people of Sudan. With continued dialogue, international support, and the active involvement of Sudanese stakeholders, a peaceful resolution can be achieved, leading to a brighter future for Sudan and its people.
