PRETORIA, South Africa – In a bid to bolster peace efforts in Sudan, President Cyril Ramaphosa today met with General Mohamed Dagalo, leader of the powerful Rapid Support Forces (RSF), at the Mahlamba Ndlopfu official residence.
The meeting comes amidst ongoing political and security tensions in Sudan, with the SAF and RSF facing off in a delicate power struggle. Ramaphosa welcomed Dagalo’s briefing and commended the efforts of the African Union and IGAD, under the leadership of Djibouti, in mediating between the two parties. He also highlighted the crucial role of Sudanese civil society and the public in finding a lasting solution.
Expressing South Africa’s unwavering support for the region’s stability, Ramaphosa stressed the importance of immediate action. He urged both General Dagalo and General Burhan, head of the SAF, to engage in direct dialogue and reiterated the need for an immediate ceasefire and a permanent cessation of hostilities.
“The people of Sudan deserve peace and stability,” Ramaphosa stated. “South Africa stands ready to assist in any way possible to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the conflict.”
The meeting between Ramaphosa and Dagalo is a significant step in the ongoing peace efforts. The RSF’s role in the Sudanese political landscape is crucial, and its engagement in dialogue is essential for any lasting solution.
