Beijing, 15 July 2025 — Deputy President Shipokosa Paulus Mashatile today undertook a guided tour of the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) headquarters in Beijing, as part of his strategic Working Visit to the People’s Republic of China. The visit forms part of ongoing efforts to deepen bilateral relations and strengthen economic cooperation between South Africa and China.

Upon arrival, the Deputy President was warmly received by CSCEC Chief Executive Officer, Mr Wen Bing, who led the South African delegation through an overview of the company’s expansive infrastructure portfolio. CSCEC is renowned as one of China’s largest construction and investment conglomerates, with expertise spanning architectural design, high-end airport planning, landscape architecture, wastewater management, utility tunnels, and sponge city technologies.

In remarks during the tour, Deputy President Mashatile positioned South Africa not only as a prime destination for global investment, but as a strategic partner in infrastructure development and industrialisation on the African continent.

“South Africa is not just a destination for investment,” said the Deputy President, “but a strategic partner for CSCEC to build infrastructure and industrial ecosystems that serve Africa and the world. Our projects are ready, our policies are enabling, and our commitment to this partnership is unwavering.”

The Deputy President extended an open invitation to CSCEC to explore opportunities in co-creating transformative infrastructure initiatives across key sectors, including energy, rail modernisation, and urban development.

The Deputy President was accompanied by Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ms Thandi Moraka, and Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mr Parks Tau. The delegation’s engagements aim to accelerate partnerships that unlock inclusive growth, technology transfer, and job creation through robust international cooperation.

This engagement marks a critical milestone in reinforcing South Africa’s efforts to attract sustainable infrastructure investment and aligns with the broader objectives of the BRICS framework, in which both nations are key members.

Over the years, I have found it challenging to define myself solely by an academic qualification, trade, or occupation. My eagerness to learn, especially about how to build and deploy capital, has allowed me to accumulate diverse experiences in a short span of time. Through this journey, I have discovered that at my core, I am a storyteller. I tell the stories of corporations, their heritage, and the individuals who act in their name. I explore the role of these institutions in fulfilling the promise of a better Africa, and, most importantly, the causal link between the rule of law and economic development. As a fellow believer in Africa’s potential, can I count on you to be a point of light in securing our continent’s future?
