In a male-dominated industry, Natasha Pillay has become a force to be reckoned with, capturing the attention of the mining world, not just in South Africa, but now making waves in Angola as well. Recently, we had the privilege of sitting down with Natasha to discuss her remarkable journey, the challenges she faces, and what it’s like to be a woman breaking barriers in such a tough sector.

A Rising Star in the Mining Industry

Pillay, who has quickly become the talk of the town, is not only known for her expertise in the mining business but also for her determination and resilience. With multiple operations spread across various plants, she has gained the respect and support of many plant owners. However, not all her experiences in the industry have been smooth sailing. Some encounters have proven to be far more difficult, challenging her integrity and the trust placed in her by plant owners.

“The industry is challenging, not just in procuring the feed, but mainly in dealing with the integrity and honesty of plant owners,” Pillay explains. “Some share the same goals and genuinely support me as a woman leading the industry, while others have presented entirely different challenges.”

A Disturbing Incident on March 12

One such challenge occurred on March 12, when Pillay’s company supplied feed to one of the plants under her watch. The plant reported that their transformer had blown up, and they needed diesel to restart their generator, promising to immediately resume the washing of the feedstock once the fuel was provided. Pillay, known for her promptness, acted quickly and ensured that the plant received the requested diesel, at a cost of R20,000.

However, when Pillay and her team arrived at the plant, they were shocked to find that the employee washing the material was using their diesel to prepare his own material instead. “He seemed completely unbothered by his actions,” says Pillay. This dishonesty is part of the pattern of behavior that has made her question her business relationship with the plant.

A Roller-Coaster Journey Ahead

The plant in question initially requested full payment upfront for tolling services, but an agreement was eventually reached to split the payment — 50% upfront and 50% when the product was ready. However, recently, the same plant demanded the entire payment upfront, raising red flags for Pillay. She believes the manner in which the plant handled the diesel situation only serves to heighten the risk of this partnership.

“It’s incredibly challenging, but with the support I’m receiving from key players in the industry, I am confident that this will pass,” Pillay shares with determination. “But it’s crucial for me to warn others — especially women entering the industry — to be cautious of people who place high demands early on. Always conduct proper due diligence before engaging in any business.”

A Call to Women Entering the Industry

Having faced these challenges head-on, Pillay urges other women who aspire to join the mining industry to be vigilant and proactive. She believes that because of her young age and gender, some have tried to take advantage of her, assuming she is an “easy target.”

“The reality is, being a young female in this industry comes with its own set of challenges. People can often underestimate you or try to exploit your honesty. It’s important to stay alert, stay strong, and know your worth,” says Pillay.

Despite the hurdles, Natasha Pillay remains undeterred. With a supportive network behind her, she’s determined to continue navigating the complexities of the mining industry and emerge victorious.

As she forges ahead, Natasha is proving that not only can women excel in this field, but they can also set new standards for integrity, accountability, and leadership.

The Road Ahead

As Natasha Pillay’s journey unfolds, the industry watches closely. With her strength, vision, and unwavering determination, there is no doubt that she will continue to inspire other women in mining and beyond.

For now, all eyes are on Natasha Pillay — and she’s ready for whatever the future holds.

Over the years, I have found it challenging to define myself solely by an academic qualification, trade, or occupation. My eagerness to learn, especially about how to build and deploy capital, has allowed me to accumulate diverse experiences in a short span of time. Through this journey, I have discovered that at my core, I am a storyteller. I tell the stories of corporations, their heritage, and the individuals who act in their name. I explore the role of these institutions in fulfilling the promise of a better Africa, and, most importantly, the causal link between the rule of law and economic development. As a fellow believer in Africa’s potential, can I count on you to be a point of light in securing our continent’s future?
