The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa has issued a statement to clarify recent developments related to the SABC Group Executive for News, Mr. Moshoeshoe Monare. In response to media reports attempting to link Mr. Monare’s vetting process with statements attributed to the President, the Presidency sought to dispel any misinformation and reaffirm its commitment to media freedom as enshrined in the country’s constitution.

Vincent Magwenya, Spokesperson to the President of South Africa.

According to the statement, the SABC initiated the vetting process for Mr. Monare, consistent with the practice for all SABC executives. Contrary to claims of targeting ahead of elections, it was clarified that Mr. Monare’s predecessor underwent a similar vetting process without issues. Moreover, it was emphasized that the vetting process does not encompass practicing journalists or reporters at the SABC, a category in which Mr. Monare does not fall.

The process faced a hurdle when Mr. Monare declined to undergo a polygraph test, which is part of the vetting process. Consequently, the vetting was not completed, contrary to claims, and there was no recent communication from the State Security Agency (SSA) regarding Mr. Monare’s vetting.

Additionally, the statement highlighted that the vetting process for Mr. Monare began in 2022 upon his appointment and remains incomplete due to the aforementioned obstacle. It was also noted that the current SABC Group Chief Executive, Ms. Nomsa Chabeli, is undergoing a similar vetting process, as did the current board of directors of the SABC.

President Ramaphosa’s administration reiterated its stance against intimidation or harassment of journalists, emphasizing its commitment to upholding media freedom.
