Luanda, Angola – 24 November 2025
President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived in Luanda on Monday morning to participate in the 7th African Union–European Union (AU-EU) Summit, taking place from 24 to 25 November 2025. The high-level gathering marks a significant milestone, the 25th anniversary of the AU-EU partnership, first established at the inaugural summit in Cairo, Egypt, in 2000 under what was then known as the “EU-Africa Partnership.”

The partnership evolved into the “AU-EU Summit” in 2017 during the Abidjan meeting in Côte d’Ivoire, shaping a renewed era of strategic cooperation between the two regions.

This year’s summit convenes against the backdrop of escalating global instability, with conflicts persisting across several regions and a growing tendency toward unilateralism by some states. Despite these challenges, the Luanda Summit follows a moment of global diplomatic success for Africa, the recently concluded 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, where the African Union and European Union played major roles in building consensus on issues critical to global economic resilience and social progress.

As a committed member of the AU, South Africa will use the summit to advance support from the European Union for the Second Ten-Year Implementation Plan (STYIP) of Agenda 2063, the continent’s blueprint for transformation.

The Summit brings together leaders from two of the world’s most influential regional blocs to deepen political and economic cooperation. Host President João Lourenço, serving as Chairperson of the African Union, will lead the AU delegation alongside AU Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.

Europe will be represented by President of the European Council António Costa, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, and heads of state and government from Denmark, France, Hungary, Croatia, Spain, the Czech Republic, Italy, Finland, Poland, Slovakia, Portugal, Ireland and Germany.

Discussions in Luanda will centre around two key thematic plenaries reflecting long-standing areas of AU-EU collaboration:

  • Thematic Session I: Peace, Security and Governance and Multilateralism
  • Thematic Session II: Prosperity, People – Migration and Mobility

President Ramaphosa is accompanied by Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Ronald Lamola, as South Africa positions itself to strengthen continental priorities within the AU-EU strategic framework.

Over the years, I have found it challenging to define myself solely by an academic qualification, trade, or occupation. My eagerness to learn, especially about how to build and deploy capital, has allowed me to accumulate diverse experiences in a short span of time. Through this journey, I have discovered that at my core, I am a storyteller. I tell the stories of corporations, their heritage, and the individuals who act in their name. I explore the role of these institutions in fulfilling the promise of a better Africa, and, most importantly, the causal link between the rule of law and economic development. As a fellow believer in Africa’s potential, can I count on you to be a point of light in securing our continent’s future?
