South Africa’s delegation, led by Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana, wrapped up a robust engagement at the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2024 Annual Meeting in Davos. The delegation, including key ministers, business leaders, and civil society representatives, utilized the platform to emphasize South Africa’s resilience and attractiveness for investment.

The overarching theme of WEF 2024, “Rebuilding Trust,” resonated with South Africa’s commitment to maintaining its leadership role in the global community. Minister Godongwana highlighted the importance of multilateralism and cooperation in fostering economic growth, underlining the nation’s dedication to a fairer and more inclusive global system.

Addressing inquiries on economic reforms, the delegation spotlighted progress in energy, transport, logistics, and crime prevention. Minister Godongwana affirmed South Africa’s advancement since achieving democracy three decades ago, acknowledging challenges in balancing fiscal sustainability, growth-oriented reforms, and targeted investments in social services and infrastructure.

The week-long WEF meeting provided South Africa’s policymakers with a unique opportunity to engage with a diverse range of global stakeholders. Discussions on climate, technology, trade, and multilateral cooperation took center stage, alongside anticipation for South Africa’s G20 presidency in 2025.

Beyond the G20, South Africa’s pivotal role in the BRICS group expansion and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) was emphasized. Minister Godongwana, speaking at a panel on the BRICS in Expansion, underscored the bloc’s significance in reforming international decision-making bodies to align with contemporary power and economic realities.

“Despite varying economic circumstances, common interests within BRICS+ will foster consensus on sustainable economic development, making the bloc a potent voice for the global south,” Minister Godongwana asserted.

As South Africa navigates its upcoming G20 presidency and contributes to BRICS expansion and AfCFTA, the nation remains steadfast in its commitment to shaping a more equitable and prosperous global landscape.
