In an industry traditionally dominated by men, women like Natasha Pillay are emerging as powerful forces in mining, demonstrating resilience, innovation, and the drive to defy expectations.

From humble beginnings in Pietermaritzburg, Natasha has defied the odds, working her way to the top of South Africa’s mining sector and establishing herself as a trailblazer among the giants of the industry. Despite not having the privilege of tertiary education like many of her peers, Natasha’s unwavering determination has turned the impossible into a reality.
Her journey began in the media, where she worked with the renowned 1873 FM radio station. But Natasha’s entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop there. She launched her own spa and beauty brand, Forever Beautiful, showcasing her versatile talents beyond the airwaves. She didn’t just stop at owning businesses; she became the director of two companies, securing major steel contracts that have significantly contributed to her standing in the corporate world.
The year 2022 was a milestone in Natasha’s career, when she successfully ran her own mining production operation, making her one of the few young women in South Africa to break into an industry that has long been a male-dominated arena. Her story is one of grit, ambition, and a relentless drive to succeed.
Fast forward to 2024, and Natasha has sealed a monumental deal with China’s Bao Group, the largest steel producer in the world. Over the past four years, the Bao Group has led the global steel industry, and now, a woman-owned business has earned its place at the table. This contract is not just a business achievement for Natasha; it is a groundbreaking moment for women in mining, a clear signal that they too can conquer industries traditionally seen as out of reach.
Her achievements are a testament to the evolving landscape of mining, where women are no longer just participants—they are leaders, innovators, and giants in their own right. Natasha Pillay’s remarkable journey shows that with resilience, ambition, and a refusal to give up, women can redefine the future of mining and beyond.
Her story is not just about personal success—it is about inspiring countless women who dream of breaking barriers and charting their own paths in industries that have historically excluded them. Natasha Pillay stands as a powerful example that when women lead, the future of mining—and the world—becomes brighter and more inclusive.
Over the years, I have found it challenging to define myself solely by an academic qualification, trade, or occupation. My eagerness to learn, especially about how to build and deploy capital, has allowed me to accumulate diverse experiences in a short span of time. Through this journey, I have discovered that at my core, I am a storyteller. I tell the stories of corporations, their heritage, and the individuals who act in their name. I explore the role of these institutions in fulfilling the promise of a better Africa, and, most importantly, the causal link between the rule of law and economic development. As a fellow believer in Africa’s potential, can I count on you to be a point of light in securing our continent’s future?
