Johannesburg, 25 July 2024 – The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) will launch South Africa’s inaugural State of Climate Action Report today in Johannesburg. This landmark report offers a comprehensive analysis of the impact of climate change on the nation and evaluates South Africa’s progress towards limiting global warming to 1.5°C and enhancing climate resilience. It highlights both areas of success and those needing improvement, with a particular focus on the livelihoods of individuals most affected by climate transitions.

The report is the culmination of years of testimonies, experiences from South Africans, and extensive data collection. It supplements the critical climate tracking work performed by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE), among other organizations.

The launch event will include the official handover of the report by PCC Deputy Chair Valli Moosa to Ms. Nomfundo Tshabalala, the Director General of the DFFE, who will receive it on behalf of the Minister of the DFFE, Dr. Dion George. Ms. Tshabalala will also deliver a keynote address.

Commissioned by the PCC, the report aims to inform policymakers, stakeholders, and the public about urgent actions needed to mitigate climate change effects. It presents an actionable assessment to help the country advance towards its climate and just transition goals, urging the 7th administration to implement its recommendations promptly.
