In the heart of Harare, a transportation crisis is spiralling out of control as commuter omnibuses, commonly known as kombis, create a nightmare for urban passengers, motorists, and pedestrians alike.

The scene at OK Supermarket along Julius Nyerere Way is emblematic of this chaos, where kombis loading for Glenwood Park and Maruwa obstruct traffic, creating hazardous conditions that threaten public safety.

Every day, these kombis load passengers while stationary on the road, turning the thoroughfare into a battleground of noise from the incessant shouting of loaders seeking to fill their vehicles thus exacerbating noise pollution and disrupting the lives of nearby residents and drivers.

As they keep a vigilant eye out for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and City Traffic Police, kombi drivers engage in a dangerous game of cat and mouse, thus endangering the lives of pedestrians and other motorists who are left to navigate a treacherous environment.

Kombis are frequently seen at various hotspots including, corner Robert Mugabe Way and Julius Nyerere Way for Mabvuku, corner Robert Mugabe Way and Chinhoyi Street for Mufakose, and at Mbuya Nehanda Street and Robert Mugabe Way for Budiriro and Glen View.

This rampant disregard for established traffic regulations is a glaring failure of the Harare City Council, which has yet to provide well-designed official ranks for these operators.

The implications of this chaos extend beyond mere inconvenience; it represents a national embarrassment since by turning the image of Harare into a chaotic urban centre can deter foreign investors, as they prioritize stability and order.

This ongoing disorder sends a clear message that the city is unable to manage its transport system effectively, undermining its potential for growth and development.

It is therefore urgent that city fathers and law enforcement authorities take a firm stand to restore order, since the time has come for a comprehensive strategy that includes the allocation of official parking spaces for kombis that prioritize public safety.

Transport operators, city officials, and law enforcement must collaborate to develop a structured approach to this crisis because the citizens of Harare deserve better than this daily unfortunate ordeal.

It is imperative that we demand accountability from our leaders and push for solutions that will restore safety and sanity to our streets.

The chaotic state of Harare’s transport system cannot continue; the future of the capital depends on decisive action today.
