Dear BOAFERS AND ALL

I am writing to address the recent events that have unfolded in Ratanda, where tensions have escalated into violence targeting foreign-owned shops. The catalyst for this unrest was the tragic and heartbreaking incident involving the murder of 3-year-old Melokuhle Ngwenya.

As members of the Banking on Africa’s Future’s (BOAF) equality, diversity, and inclusion initiative, we stand firm in our belief that every living person is equal, regardless of their background or place of birth. We echo the sentiments of the Africa Heritage Society (AHS) in advocating for the indivisibility of humanity and the recognition of certain unalienable rights endowed by the Creator, including the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness or property.

It is crucial to acknowledge that identity politics and divisive rhetoric only serve to undermine our collective progress toward a more inclusive and problem-solving-oriented society. Labeling places of commerce or value addition as foreign or indigenous should not be a justification for discrimination or violence.

We urge all members of our community to embrace Ubuntu, a principle that emphasizes humanity, compassion, and mutual respect. Let us channel our energies towards constructive dialogue, understanding, and collaborative solutions that uplift and empower every individual, irrespective of their nationality or background.

Together, we can build a future where diversity is celebrated, equality is upheld, and inclusivity is the cornerstone of our society.

Sincerely,

Ms. Alisha Smith, a member of the BOAF-1OKPOL-FOAS INITIATIVE – THE FUTURE IS WRITTEN IN THE PRESENT TENSE.
