Born and raised in the lively township of Tembisa, Ebony Park, Joyce Malifo Sihlaba has emerged as one of South Africa’s most inspiring beauty entrepreneurs — a woman whose story reflects determination, vision, and the power of purpose.

Joyce Malifo Sihlaba, Founder of Madam S Glam Parlour.

Her journey began under the shade of a tree in Midrand, where her mother styled clients’ hair to make ends meet. Those humble beginnings, anchored in hard work and resilience, shaped Joyce’s entrepreneurial spirit long before she ever dreamed of owning her own business.

“I grew up seeing my mother work tirelessly,” Joyce recalls. “She always said, ‘Nothing in life comes for mahala.’ At just 12 years old, I was already helping her with clients. Back then, I used to feel shy when my friends saw me working, but today I thank her for every lesson she taught me.”

Turning Passion into Purpose

In 2023, Joyce officially registered her business, transforming a childhood passion into a professional brand. While her foundation came from traditional hairstyling, she quickly evolved with the times — offering hair installations, makeup services, nail artistry, and modern beauty solutions.

“I wanted to move with the times while still honouring what my mom taught me,” she says.

Like many young entrepreneurs, Joyce faced challenges — especially in building a loyal client base and creating brand visibility. Yet instead of giving up, she innovated. By opening an academy within her salon, she began teaching women how to do their own makeup and training aspiring makeup artists.

“That was a turning point for me,” she explains. “It allowed me to empower others while growing my own business.”

A Partnership That Powers Growth

Behind Joyce’s success stands a strong pillar of support — her husband. From assisting with events and community outreach to creating vital networking opportunities, his encouragement has been instrumental.

It was through him that Joyce discovered the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) — a move that transformed her professional journey.

“Joining JCCI changed my life,” Joyce says proudly. “They taught me what my business truly needed to grow and gave me opportunities I never imagined. They made my dream come true by flying me to China for my first international training — something I had only dreamed about.”

Rising Recognition and Global Impact

Through the JCCI’s Employability for Youth and Women in South Africa (EYWA) Programme, Joyce gained business knowledge, digital literacy, and confidence as a Black woman entrepreneur. Her growth has been extraordinary, earning her recognition and multiple accolades in the beauty industry.

Final Word

From the dusty streets of Tembisa to international recognition, Joyce Malifo Sihlaba stands as a shining symbol of what passion, perseverance, and purpose can achieve. Through her work, she continues to redefine beauty — not as something external, but as a force of confidence, creativity, and empowerment that shines from within.

Over the years, I have found it challenging to define myself solely by an academic qualification, trade, or occupation. My eagerness to learn, especially about how to build and deploy capital, has allowed me to accumulate diverse experiences in a short span of time. Through this journey, I have discovered that at my core, I am a storyteller. I tell the stories of corporations, their heritage, and the individuals who act in their name. I explore the role of these institutions in fulfilling the promise of a better Africa, and, most importantly, the causal link between the rule of law and economic development. As a fellow believer in Africa’s potential, can I count on you to be a point of light in securing our continent’s future?
