Cape Town — At the recent mining investment gathering in Cape Town, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Mines, Dr. Polite Kambamura, held high-level discussions with senior representatives from Abu Dhabi sovereign investor ADQ, following an introduction facilitated by Tinashe Mpasiri.

The engagement took place during a private dinner hosted by Mutupa Investment Fund, where the ADQ delegation, led by Ahmed Alhammadi, alongside Ryan Freeman and Philip Du Toit, met with the minister to explore potential investment opportunities in Zimbabwe’s mining-linked critical infrastructure.
Strategic introduction for infrastructure investment
Mr. Mpasiri, a board member of Banking On Africa’s Future (BOAF) and its Director of Corporate Literacy and International Relations, coordinated the introduction as part of broader efforts to mobilise international capital into Southern Africa’s resource and infrastructure value chains.
According to participants, discussions focused on:
•Energy infrastructure supporting mining operations
•Logistics corridors and rail modernisation
•Mineral processing and beneficiation facilities
•Long-term sovereign-linked investment partnerships
Zimbabwe, one of Southern Africa’s most mineral-rich jurisdictions, is actively seeking international partners to expand production in gold, lithium, chrome and platinum group metals while upgrading legacy infrastructure.
Gateway strategy through South Africa
Mr. Mpasiri has consistently advocated for positioning South Africa as the primary financial and operational gateway for investment flows into the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, including Zimbabwe.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, he emphasised that coordinated regional investment frameworks can significantly reduce entry barriers for global institutional investors.
“Africa’s growth story increasingly depends on structured partnerships between sovereign capital, regional networks, and host governments. Strategic introductions like this help translate opportunity into implementable projects,” he noted.
ADQ’s global infrastructure mandate
ADQ is one of Abu Dhabi’s major sovereign investment platforms, with a portfolio spanning infrastructure, energy, logistics, food security, and strategic industries worldwide. Its participation in discussions signals growing Middle Eastern interest in African mining-adjacent infrastructure, particularly where projects combine resource extraction with national development priorities.
Strengthening investment diplomacy
Observers at the dinner described the meeting as part of a wider shift toward investment diplomacy, where structured private engagements during major industry events are increasingly used to initiate sovereign-level partnerships.
With Zimbabwe actively pursuing capital for industrial revitalisation and regional logistics integration, the introduction is seen as a potential first step toward deeper technical and financial engagements in the months ahead.
