Sugarcane harvesting underway

In the spirit of Ubuntfu, which teaches us that “I am because we are,” the Ngcayizivela Farming Association, a dedicated group of sugarcane farmers in Nkambeni, humbly reaches out for support as they navigate significant financial challenges. Their commitment to feeding their families and contributing to the country’s economy remains strong, but they find themselves struggling under the weight of increasing costs and a newly introduced 37% tax.

As responsible citizens, these farmers understand the importance of contributing to national development. However, they seek a compassionate review of this tax, as it poses a great challenge to their ability to sustain their farms. Farming is not just their livelihood, it is a service to the nation, ensuring food security and economic stability. Yet, with rising operational costs, particularly the soaring prices of diesel needed for tractors and irrigation, their ability to continue producing sugarcane is under threat.

One farmer shared, “We work tirelessly to ensure our crops grow, not for personal wealth, but to reduce hunger in our homes and communities. With the current tax, it is becoming increasingly difficult to afford the essential inputs like seeds, fertilizers, water and fuel. We fear that if no support is provided, some of us may be forced to abandon farming, which would not only affect our families but the community at large.”

The Ngcayizivela Farming Association remains hopeful that through open dialogue and collaboration, solutions can be found that balance the needs of the country with the sustainability of small-scale farming. They believe in the power of unity and are willing to work hand in hand with the government to explore alternative ways to support national development without placing an unbearable strain on small farmers.

As a nation, our strength lies in working together. The farmers of Ngcayizivela trust that their concerns will be heard and that a way forward can be found; one that upholds the values of Ubuntfu, ensuring peace, progress and prosperity for all.

An effort to reach out to both the Ministry of Agriculture and Finance hit a brick wall since their phones went unanswered.
