The Unscripted Design of Life: Lessons From Jovan Regasek’s Journey

In an article published by ITWeb, it is noted that Jovan Regasek founded the company in March 1996, merely two years after arriving in South Africa from Belgrade, Serbia, a place still grappling with the remnants of a war-torn Yugoslavia. On the surface, this storyline fits neatly into the familiar narrative of an immigrant entrepreneur who arrives in a new land and builds something remarkable.

Yet, when I had the privilege of meeting Jovan a few years ago, he shared a version of his story that revealed a deeper truth about the design and operation of life. He told me that he did not come to South Africa with a business plan, or a grand strategy, or a vision to build one of the country’s most influential technology media houses. He came simply because his daughter had moved to South Africa with her boyfriend, and he followed her.

That single act, not strategic, not entrepreneurial, not calculated, became the seed of a legacy.

This is the quiet architecture of life: it offers no guarantee of outcomes, no detailed blueprint, no certainty that one path will lead to prosperity or another to failure. We are often taught to believe that success comes from planning, discipline, and intention. While these things matter, the truth is that life often bends in directions we never anticipated, through decisions that seem small at the time, driven by love, circumstance, or intuition.

Jovan’s journey is not a story of business foresight, but of human responsiveness. He followed his daughter. Life did the rest.

When he arrived in South Africa, he could not have known that the turbulence he left behind would give rise to stability in a new land; that the choice to support his child would evolve into a national platform informing and shaping the technology landscape; that circumstances, not ambition, would place him at the beginning of a defining chapter in South Africa’s digital story.

It is this unpredictability that reveals something profound about life’s operating system:

Life is not linear.

Purpose is often discovered, not planned.

The most significant journeys begin without the awareness that they are beginning.

The outcomes of life are never promised, they are revealed through motion.

Jovan’s story is a reminder that we are all participants in a design far larger than our intentions. We step into decisions not knowing the ultimate consequence. We follow people we love. We respond to disruptions. We adapt. And in that adaptation, new worlds open.

The lesson is simple but timeless: show up, move, and trust the uncertainty. Life does not owe us a predictable outcome, but it often rewards those who are willing to step into the unknown.

Over the years, I have found it challenging to define myself solely by an academic qualification, trade, or occupation. My eagerness to learn, especially about how to build and deploy capital, has allowed me to accumulate diverse experiences in a short span of time. Through this journey, I have discovered that at my core, I am a storyteller. I tell the stories of corporations, their heritage, and the individuals who act in their name. I explore the role of these institutions in fulfilling the promise of a better Africa, and, most importantly, the causal link between the rule of law and economic development. As a fellow believer in Africa’s potential, can I count on you to be a point of light in securing our continent’s future?
