President Cyril Ramaphosa lauded the reopening of the expanded Tetra Pak carton packaging plant, situated in Pinetown, KwaZulu/Natal, as a significant milestone in the collaboration between government and business to foster economic growth. The President, along with dignitaries including the Premier of Kwa Zulu Natal, Ms. Nomusa Dube-Ncube, and His Excellency Hakan Juholt, Ambassador of Sweden to South Africa, celebrated the unveiling of the upgraded facility on April 4, 2024.

This event marks a substantial investment of R 500 million by Tetra Pak into the South African economy, as part of the Presidential Investment Mobilisation Drive. President Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of such investments in job creation, innovation promotion, and the advancement of a low-carbon, circular economy.

In his address, President Ramaphosa highlighted the significance of the investment, noting that it contributes to the government’s ambitious goal set in 2018 to attract R1.2 trillion in investments. He commended Tetra Pak for its commitment to South Africa, despite the challenges posed by the current economic climate, and praised the company’s role in bolstering the local manufacturing sector.

The expansion of the Tetra Pak facility is not only expected to create jobs but also to promote localization efforts. With an increased capacity to produce carton aseptic packaging for both domestic and export markets, Tetra Pak aims to enhance its contribution to South Africa’s industrial landscape.

Furthermore, the President underscored the significance of Tetra Pak’s alignment with the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which opens up new opportunities for exports to other African countries. He expressed confidence that the expanded facility would harness the benefits of AfCFTA, further boosting South Africa’s position as a regional economic hub.

Tetra Pak, a global leader in packaging and processing solutions, has been operating in South Africa since 1963. The longevity of its presence in the country reflects its commitment to innovation and sustainability. The upgraded facility not only strengthens Tetra Pak’s local manufacturing capabilities but also underscores its dedication to environmental responsibility, with aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

President Ramaphosa concluded his remarks by commending Tetra Pak for its ongoing investment and confidence in South Africa. He reiterated the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive and expressed anticipation for future collaborations and investments with Tetra Pak.

The reopening of the Tetra Pak plant represents a significant milestone in South Africa’s journey towards economic resilience, job creation, and sustainable development.
