Deputy President Mashatile Shares Uplifting Christmas Message, Reflects on South Africa’s Achievements in 2023

Deputy President Shipokosa Paulus Mashatile, in a heartfelt Christmas message to the nation, expressed great joy and reflected on the successes and challenges faced by South Africa in the passing year. The Deputy President emphasized the significance of unity in diversity during the festive season and highlighted the opportunity for families to engage in inter-generational conversations about their unique lineages and the history of the nation.

Acknowledging the strides made in undoing the legacy of apartheid spatial planning, Deputy President Mashatile outlined the government’s efforts in improving social services, including education, healthcare, housing, water, and sanitation. Notable achievements include increased access to early childhood development, doubled secondary education completion rates, decreased disability prevalence, improved water accessibility, and increased electricity coverage.

Despite these achievements, the Deputy President recognized the ongoing work required to establish South Africa as an equal and prosperous society. He called on citizens to embrace the spirit of giving during the festive season and to consider those less fortunate, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to create positive change in society.

Deputy President Mashatile urged a renewed commitment to the values of Ubuntu, emphasizing the importance of love and care for one another. He invoked the spirit of harmony, citing the shared joy of the Rugby World Cup 2023 victory as a moment for the nation to come together, setting aside disagreements for the greater good.

Addressing critical issues, the Deputy President highlighted collaborative efforts with stakeholders to combat Gender-Based Violence and Femicide and contribute to the fight against HIV/AIDS and TB. He urged adherence to health and safety precautions during the festive period, particularly for those on Anti-Retroviral Therapy, contraceptives, and chronic treatments.

As the festive season approaches, motorists were reminded to prioritize road safety, adhere to traffic rules, and avoid nighttime travel when possible. Special consideration was given to the Matric Class of 2023, with well-wishes for their impending results, along with gratitude expressed towards teachers and parents for their support.

Deputy President Mashatile extended appreciation to all individuals, including health workers, law enforcement officials, firefighters, community workers, faith leaders, and traditional authorities, for their unwavering dedication throughout the year. The message concluded with warm wishes for everlasting joy, peace, and happiness for all South Africans and visitors during the holiday season.
