President Ramaphosa acknowledged the challenges these men and women faced during their rigorous training, emphasizing the demanding nature of their chosen profession. He commended them for choosing the path of service and dedication, acknowledging the sacrifices they made away from friends and family.

Expressing concern about the prevailing crime rates in the country, the President highlighted the urgent need for a robust response. He emphasized that the new recruits are a crucial part of the government’s strategy to address crime, with 10,000 new recruits trained in 2023 alone.

President Ramaphosa outlined the significant progress made by the SAPS, citing Operation Shanela, which resulted in over 250,000 arrests and the recovery of numerous firearms and stolen vehicles. He applauded the collaborative efforts with the National Prosecuting Authority in securing life sentences for perpetrators of gender-based violence.

Addressing the new constables directly, President Ramaphosa stressed their responsibility as first responders, urging them to serve with courtesy, dignity, and respect. He emphasized the importance of restoring public faith in the SAPS, urging the recruits to earn the trust of the community through their actions.

As the new constables prepare to be deployed to various units, including Public Order Policing and units addressing family violence and sexual offenses, President Ramaphosa expressed confidence in their ability to uphold the laws and constitution of South Africa.
